Alex Welch has launched a new company,
Lasso, in Denver that is looking to make two hires in the near term.
Welch founded
Photobucket in Denver in 200, raised two rounds of venture capital and grew it to 140 employees before selling it to News Corp. in 2007.
After leaving in 2009 Welch had an eventful three years away from the startup scene. "I had a kid," he says. "I took up race-car driving."
He also saw a trend he couldn't ignore. "I saw the quick shift from Web to mobile," says Welch.
Lasso is a request-based app that puts the onus on content-seekers to get the media they want, rather than a top-down distribution model. "We've taken the current publishing mode and flipped it upside-down," says Welch. "Let's put the burden on the person who wants the information. Let's make it dead simple for the person who has the information.
"It essentially pre-filters your digital asset library," Welch adds. Today it's photos, but it's bigger than that."
Lasso's revenue model calls for services to brands after building a user base. Currently six employees, the angel-funded company is currently in beta mode and began the rollout in Austin at SXSW Interactive earlier in March 2013.
Welch says Lasso will seek venture capital "at some point" but for the meantime is "lean and mean."
