Mocapay
is gaining traction with its mobile-payment solutions, launching with Udi's Food in August. The company also counts Denver's Daz Bog and Chicago-based WowBao among its customers.
Currently 13 employees -- and hiring three in the near term -- the LoDo-based company has been in business since 2007, but pivoted when CEO Doug Dwyre took the helm in 2011.
Dwyre has 20 years experience in the electronic payment industry, including 14 at First Data in the Denver Tech Center.
"The new Mocapay doesn't look anything like the old Mocapay," says Dwyre. "It was originally a mobile version of PayPal. When I joined, I saw a big gap in the market. Merchants don't know what to do about mobile."
Dwyre says the company is helping merchants "mobile-enable" everything from loyalty programs to email newsletters. "It's giving merchants what Starbucks has, but at a low price point," he says.
Mocapay's backend infrastructure securely assigns a unique account for every customer with each of its merchants. "We don't store anything on the handset," says Dwyre. A single-use code is used to process the transaction. "That token only works for one customer and one merchant."
Mocapay's work with Udi's involves an app with an integrated mobile-payment functionality.
Dwyre says he hopes to work with merchant associations as well as clients in the salon and spa industries. The company is also looking to partner with resellers in the near future. "We're talking to a lot of familiar names right now," says Dwyre.
Nine of the company's employees are based in Denver and its four-person development team is in California. The new hires will work in Denver.
