The new CPR.org.
Aten Design Group
Aten Design Group
developed a new website for
Colorado Public Radio
that encompasses its news, classical, and OpenAir channels. The new
CPR.org
allows listeners to browse and listen at the same time with a persistent audio player and offers a more integrated experience, says Aten CEO Justin Toupin.
The RiNo-based interactive agency focuses on Drupal projects for nonprofit, journalism and international development organizations.
"The convergence of nonprofit and journalism is our sweet spot," says Toupin, citing clients like the Poynter Institute, the International Center for Journalism and the Center for Investigative Journalism.
Aten responded to an RFP for the CPR.org in fall 2012 and launched the new site about a year later. "It's built in Drupal 7," says Toupin. "The biggest thing is having an integrated browsing experience for all three services. That audio player is going to keep playing as you click around."
The site is also mobile-friendly, a big improvement over its predecessor. "It wouldn't work on mobile before," says Toupin.
Working for clients like Stanford University, World Resources Institute and World Wildlife Fund, the company grew from 13 to 21 employees in 2013 and Toupin expects to make five to 10 additional hires in 2014.
"We will grow a little slower," says Toupin. "I expect we'll be at 25 or 30 people by the end of 2014."
To accommodate the growth, Aten is in the midst of an expansion at its headquarters in TAXI that will double the office space to 6,000 square feet.
"Right now, space is an inhibitor for growing," Toupin says. Without the expansion, "We'd have to move the ping-pong table -- and nobody will let us do that."
The project will be complete in January 2014. The ping-pong table isn't going anywhere.
